Day Tripping around Acton MA

Before setting off for this part of Northeast Massachusetts, you may want to follow some of the links in what follows.

Let's start out with a look at ceramics at Handworks Gallery. Their offerings are by no means limited to ceramics; you may be interested in their glass, jewelry, etc. Gallery hours should be convenient for most visitors. It was Glenn Johnson's website that started me out looking for other Acton attractions.

The photography of David Fingerhut bears checking out. It isn't in Acton, but Westford is close enough. Cat lovers will want to see these pictures. Take a look at his butterflies , and ask yourself how long has it been since these beauties have roamed freely in southern New England.

If galleries do not appeal to everyone in your group, there seem to be plenty of golf courses for those desiring some scenery and exercise. I'd probably prefer one where walking is still allowed and the greens fees would not Alarm Alan Greenspan. The Twin Springs course is in Bolton, which is a bit under ten miles from Acton. I haven't seen this course, and you may want one of the fancier eighteen-hole courses in the vicinity of Acton.

If you get hungry while in Acton, the choice of eateries is pretty much dominated by pizzerias and fast-food restaurants. If you are taking small children, you might consider the picnic tables at the Children's Discovery Museum on Acton's Main Street. Surely there must be a grocery store where you can buy some provisions.

For those of us well-beyond childhood, I'd sashay over to Willow Books & Cafe. In October 2000, Kay wrote these lines in her internet journal: "...went to the nicest bookstore. ... A very pretty, clean, spacious, well designed store." She said nothing about the cafe section, but I would not go expecting food hearty enough for a lumberjack. That's just my general comment about bookstore cafes. And please, I implore, eat while accompanied by your own reading material. Then browse the books. Am I being too picky?

If the children are along, you know there can be fevers and the occasional sight of blood. Acton Medical has Urgent Care appointments that include weekend hours.

Of course some of you have actually visited the Acton area. I'd be most grateful if you would about your Acton experience. Should you permit me to quote your comments, you can be assured that neither your name or your email address will be revealed.
